In September 2007 we were delighted to welcome Nik Wood- Jones the official Wainwright voiceover for the BBC2 television series ‘Wainwright Walks’ Presented by Julia Bradbury to stay with us at Raise View Houses to record Cumbria Tourism’s first ‘Wainwright podcast’ the walk from Grasmere up to Helm Crag. The podcast creates the effect that the late pipe-smoking fell walker himself is guiding you on one of his favourite Lake District walks.
Wainwright himself speculated that Helm Crag or the Lion & the Lamb was arguably ‘the best know hill in the country’.
Wearing full Wainwright garb, Nik walked up to Helm Crag from Raise View House and then recorded the famous writer’s thoughts and observations; exactly as they appear in the original 1958 guide book.
Nik said ‘ To wake up to the dramatic back drop of the famed Lion & the Lamb inspired me to get into character and along with John & Karen’s delicious Cumbrian breakfast and warm hospitality I was set for the day’
Nik returned to Raise View House in October 2007 to help launch the ‘Wainwright podcast’. ITV’S Border news filmed the event from the garden and Border News broadcaster Tim Backshall interviewed Eric Robson, Chairman of the WainwrightSociety and Cumbria Tourism and Nik Wood-Jones.
Eric Robson said ‘ Many people go walking in the Lake District with a Wainwright guide book for company and this is their chance to experience what it might have been like taking a walk with Wainwright by your side’
